State measure would allow ‘felon pension’ challenge

Illinois state lawmakers are advancing a bill that would make it harder for public officials to collect retirement benefits after they’re convicted of a felony.

Democratic State Representative Elaine Nekritz says her proposal would let the state’s Attorney General challenge a felon’s pension in court.
“The pension board that awarded this violated the law and there’s no way for the Attorney General or anyone else to have oversight over that.”

Nekritz says the proposal comes too late to change the benefits Burge is currently receiving. Opponents to the bill say it gives too much power to Illinois’ attorney general.
