Quinn faces new subpoenas in mismanaged Chicago program

Illinois Governor Pat Quinn is dealing with a second round of federal subpoenas tied to the mismanaged Neighborhood Recovery Initiative.  IPR's Patrick Smith has more.

Prosecutors in Chicago had subpoenaed the state agency that took over the troubled anti-crime program.

Quinn’s Republican challenger Bruce Rauner says when the Northern District starts investigating a governor - jail time usually follows.

RAUNER: "In Illinois, four out of our last seven governors went to prison. Every one of those four started with an investigation of the U.S. Attorney of the Northern District. We know how this movie ends."

QUINN: "Well he’s dead wrong and he knows it. He’s engaged in a campaign of smears. I don’t think that’s the right way to campaign for the office of governor."

Quinn also says his administration has done nothing wrong.

Rauner used the new subpoenas as a platform to release a blueprint for ethics reform. It includes calls for banning outside income for lawmakers and stopping what he calls a revolving door between lobbyists and legislators.

Quinn says he’s been working for reform for the past three decades.
