Bruce Rauner says he’ll be a “warrior” for education policy. The Republican candidate for Illinois governor revealed some new initiatives he’d take up if he wins in November’s election.
Bruce Rauner has used his personal wealth to support charter schools and other education-related causes. Monday, he announced policies that would expand those efforts if he’s elected governor. But the underlying discussion remains how to pay for education in the first place.
Rauner has said he wants to reduce the income tax rate, and doesn’t want local districts to have the option to raise property taxes. Democrats say that means way less money for the classroom. But Rauner says the state could afford it.
"Other programs will need to be cut and tax code needs to be overhauled."
Rauner’s opponent Democratic Governor Pat Quinn, chose Paul Vallas to be his running mate. Vallas has run several school districts around the country including Chicago’s, and has endorsed policies similar to Rauner’s. But in a critical response, Vallas says Rauner has no way to pay for all his ideas.
