Peoria city officials were talking trash Thursday-as in waste management.
Two-thirds of the city’s households will have a new weekly trash pickup day beginning Monday, January 7, 2019. Postcards listing the collection day changes were mailed to households last month.
Peoria’s recycling program is also switching to every other week pickup. City Manager Patrick Urich says 3000 residents have signed up for the recycling program since the tote deposit was eliminated in October.
“This is moving us closer towards a universal recycling program. There are a lot of communities that do have universal recycling and encourage all residents to recycle and we’re moving in that direction,” says Urich.
Urich adds recycling pickup is organized into two schedules, and each resident is allowed up to two recycling totes.
“We’ve split the city into two different schedules. The first is schedule A and that will begin on January 7th of 2019. Schedule B begins on January 14th.”
Some residents will now be required to set their recycling totes at the street curb instead of the alley. Otherwise, the mechanics of garbage collection aren’t changing. All trash should be bagged before being placed inside the city of Peoria or personal can. Totes should be placed by 6:00 a.m. on trash pickup day.
The seven-year, $7-million annual garbage contract with PDC is the city’s single largest. It covers approximately 40,000 households, a third of which are enrolled in the recycling program.
