U of I Medicine Creating Interdisciplinary Curriculum

Tanya Koonce

The U of I Colleges of Medicine are meeting at the Jump Trading Simulation Center in Peoria to overhaul the systems curriculum and training of future doctors.

The exercise includes more than 120 doctors, faculty and students from Peoria, Chicago, Rockford and Urbana. Dr Raymond Curry is the Senior Associate Dean for Educational Affairs at the U of I College of Medicine.

He says having the same training programs at all four U of I Campuses is a wise course for the public medical school that trains the majority of the state’s doctors:

“What we’re trying to create here is a flexible model that can adapt as we begin to link medicine more closely with engineering, as we begin to think more about other skills and backgrounds medical students need to have in order to become effective physicians.”

The new aligned curriculum will be implemented next fall when the Peoria campus adds first year medical students. That will mean 60 additional students and 20 more faculty, plus an estimated  $2.6 million impact to the local economy.
