Grasping new learning with Common Core

blogs.dunlapcusd.net

Common Core State Standards have been in place for several years. But some parents are still concerned about being able to help their children with homework.

Dunlap Grade School Principal Mandy Ellis says there is often an implementation gap, and yet parent involvement is key to a high performing school.

“So if they are feeling concerned about the way the math is being brought home with their kids, or they have questions about that, by all means contact the teacher or administrator and voice those is in a constructive way so that we can help.”

Ellis and her colleague, Wilder Waite Principal Stacy Berg presented an overview of the Common Core Standards to the Dunlap School Board Wednesday night as part of its regular meeting.

Berg says it is a change in the way most adults think about learning.

“We thought we are either good or bad at math. There is either a right or wrong answer. I think Common Core allows a paradigm shift that focuses on problem solving and that there are numerous ways to get to an answer.”

The Common Core State Standards are based on federal regulations with the goal to grow a larger mass of graduates in the STEM fields. That's with the implied understanding the U.S. needs more people skilled in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math areas to fill the jobs available now.

The Common Core State Standards require two summary tests annually to measure a student’s learning and proficiency.
