The Illinois State Police are identifying a Stark County man fatally shot over the weekend by police officers.

Officers with the multi-agency Henry County Special Operations Squad tried to arrest 66-year-old Rodney G. Williams early Saturday morning inside his apartment in the 500 block of North Olive Street in Toulon.

Williams was wanted on a previous misdemeanor charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon filed Friday in Stark County. Authorities say Williams tried to strike police with a machete. Officers then shot and killed Williams.

Rodney A. Williams had filed with the court for temporary guardianship over Rodney G. Williams on February 10, citing the latter Williams' alleged disability.

The Henry County Sheriff's Office placed two deputies on paid administrative leave following the Saturday shooting. The special operations squad includes various law enforcement officers from Henry and Stark county law enforcement agencies.

The state police are investigating the incident. Their investigation will then be forwarded to the Stark County State's Attorney for review.
