A 12-year-old girl is dead after a house fire in Creve Coeur early Wednesday morning.

The Creve Coeur Police Department said first responders were called to a fire at 500 Groveland St. just before 4:30 a.m. One resident escaped the house, but told firefighters his girlfriend's daughter was still inside.

The body of Madelynn McCain of Pekin was found on the second floor. Police say today was her 12th birthday.

Another young girl visiting the family was able to escape the home by jumping out a second story window. She was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation treatment and released.

The fire is under investigation.
