Peoria County Man Sentenced To 90 Years In Prison For Grisly 2018 Murder

A gavel rests on a judge's bench in a blurry courtroom. The text "WCBU Courts" sits on top of that photo.

A 41-year-old Edelstein man will likely spend the rest of his life in prison for the 2018 murder and dismemberment of a woman.

Gary Berchtold was sentenced Wednesday in Marshall County Circuit Court to 90 years in prison for the murder of 38-year-old Tiffini Murphy.

He faced charges of first-degree murder, dismembering a human body, and concealing a homicidal death.

Prosecutors say Berchtold shot Murphy several times during a fight at his house. He then burned her body over several days and scattered the ashes at a dump site, authorities said.

Berchtold first told authorities he dropped Murphy off at a Lacon gas station, and claimed she fled to Florida. But he later told authorities she was accidentally shot during a struggle and he attempted to cover it up.
