Chechnya Votes

Linda talks with NPR's Andy Bowers in Chechnya, where voters are turning out in huge numbers to elect a new president. Two years ago, the Chechen Republic seceded from Russia. Russian President Boris Yeltsin sent in the army to break the rebellion. After 18 months of warfare and a failure to stop the secession, the Russian Army has withdrawn and Russia agreed to the elections being held today.
