Illinois’ child welfare system will have a new director under Governor-elect Bruce Rauner.
Outgoing director Bobbie Gregg hasn’t even been on the job for a year. She took over Illinois’ Department of Children and Family Services after controversies involving her predecessors.
DCFS oversees foster care and vulnerable youth. Wednesday, Gregg told a legislative committee she’d been informed she wouldn’t stay on the job.
"My objective in seeking this position was to affect change in child welfare. And if this is the way in which that happens, then all for the better for the State of Illinois."
A spokesman for Governor-elect Bruce Rauner says Rauner is committed to transforming DCFS. Gregg’s resignation follows a Chicago Tribune series documenting lack of oversight at residential treatment centers for youth.
Earlier, Gregg’s predecessor resigned after WBEZ and Chicago Sun-Times raised questions about a paternity case in his past, and a conviction for stealing from his former employer.
