It's now up to Governor Pat Quinn whether "hang up and drive" will become law in Illinois. The House gave final approval Tuesday to a measure that would make it illegal to talk on a hand-held phone while driving. Representative John D'Amico, a Democrat from Chicago, says talking on the phone while driving has been linked to traffic accidents.
"What we're trying to do is just go back to basics. When you took driver's ed, when I took driver's ed, they taught us to keep our hands at '10 and two,' not '10 and with one hand on the phone.' "
Under the proposal, it would still be legal to use a speaker-phone, headset or other hands-free device. The legislation passed the House on a vote of 69 to 48.
