The USDA approved a waiver allowing families on the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) food program to substitute other milk products when coupon-eligible milk isn't available. Peoria City/County Health Department administrator Monica Hendrickson said this has become a problem as people are overpurchasing WIC-approved items at grocery stores.
"This waiver allows families and grocery stores and those that take WIC to accept those substitutions so those mothers and children are able to get the nutrition that they need," she said. Participants are asked to choose the milk closest to what they're prescribed if their usual approved product isn't available. The waiver lasts through May 31. Hendrickson said waivers on other food products are also under consideration.
