And Then There Were Two: GOP Candidate for IL-17 Withdraws

Eugene Farrell of Roseville is calling it quits on his campaign for the Republican nomination for the 17th Congressional District.

Farrell withdrew his candidacy with the Illinois State Board of Elections on Sunday afternoon. This leaves Esther Joy King of Moline and Bill Fawell of Galena in the primary.

King is an attorney, business owner, and a member of the U.S. Army Reserve in Rock Island. Fawell was the Republican candidate for the seat in 2018, but the state party pulled support after his beliefs in 9/11 conspiracy theories came to light.

The two candidates are set to participate in a candidate forum 11 a.m. on Jan. 25 at the Fondulac Public Library. The forum is hosted by the League of Women Voters of Greater Peoria.

The winner of the primary is likely to face incumbent Rep. Cheri Bustos (D-Moline) in November.

The 17th Congressional District covers parts or all of Peoria, Pekin, Rockford, the Quad Cities, and Galesburg.
