LaHood: U.S. Cannot Back Down on Iran

U.S. House of Representatives

PEORIA -- U.S. Representative Darin LaHood says the reported attacks on two oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman this morning is proof that American sanctions on Iran are working.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo pinned the blame for the attacks on Iran Thursday, a charge the country denies.

“Our sanctions that we have on Iran, I think, are working, and this is their response. They are feeling the pressure. But we cannot back down to Iran. We cannot let them disrupt the important oil that we bring through those straits. And Iran does not have our best interests in mind anywhere in the world," said LaHood.

The Peoria Republican says the United States should be prepared to respond if Iran continues with similar actions. The U.S. also blamed Iran for attacks on four oil tankers in the Middle East last month, which Iran also denies.

Iran's foreign minister called the timing of today’s “suspicious” because it happened as Iran’s supreme leader was meeting with Japan’s prime minister.
