A man fatally shot by Peoria police on Sunday died instantly after suffering a single wound to the chest.

That's according to Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood. The coroner said an autopsy Monday showed Donald Wilson, 46, of Peoria, immediately lost a large amount of blood.

Peoria police officers were serving a warrant for an order of protection violation just after 12:30 p.m. Sunday when the shooting happened. Peoria Police Chief Eric Echevarria said Wilson fled into a garage, started a fire, and began to swing a shovel at the officers. The chief said two officers used their Tasers, and one officer discharged his firearm.

Wilson was pronounced dead shortly before 1:30 p.m. at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center.

All four officers involved in the incident were placed on leave pending the outcome of an investigation, per department policy.

By law, the Illinois State Police are leading the investigation. Echevarria said his department will cooperate fully with the investigation.

The Peoria County State's Attorney's Office will make the final call on whether the use of deadly force was justified.
