A Spring Valley man is out of jail after he was arrested in connection with the Thursday shooting death of his uncle in Putnam County.

Putnam County Sheriff Joshua Boedigheimer said 64-year-old Jack Carpenter was found lying motionless just before 5 p.m. Thursday at the end of the driveway at his home in rural Putnam, near Lake Thunderbird.

A handgun was found at the scene. An autopsy showed Carpenter was shot twice in the upper body.

Joshua Aalders, 26, was identified as a suspect and arrested. But the sheriff said more results from the autopsy and other evidence are needed before charges can be pressed. Aalders was released from the Putnam County Jail on Friday afternoon.

Boedighiemer said it was an isolated incident, and Aalders was released based on the circumstances of what occurred.

Aalders only had previous traffic violations on his record in Putnam and Bureau counties.
