A 100-year-old woman was killed Friday morning when she was struck by a vehicle on University Street in Peoria.

Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood said Shirley Meagher was trying to cross University near Hudson Street at 8 a.m. when she was hit.

Harwood said Meagher likely died instantly.

Peoria Police Sgt. Amy Dotson said the driver of the vehicle remained at the scene, adding heavy rainfall and darker-than-usual conditions appeared to be a contributing factor in the crash.

Dotson said witnesses reported Meagher was carrying her umbrella and had her head down as she entered the roadway.

The driver wasn't issued a ticket and displayed no signs of impairment, Dotson said.

Meagher's daughter told the coroner the centenarian walked from her apartment at Buehler Home on Sheridan to restaurant drive-thrus each morning after morning mass to collect dropped change for St. Jude and other charities.
